Help with Passport
Answers to the questions we are asked most, and a way to reach a person when they are not enough.
What is the difference between “Continue on this device” and an account?
On this device keeps everything in this browser. Nothing is uploaded, no email address is needed, and no account exists. It is the most private way to use Passport — and it means the diary lives in this browser only, so clearing site data or losing the device loses it unless you exported a backup.
An account stores a private copy of your diary so it syncs between your devices. It is private, but it is not end-to-end encrypted: the servers hold the keys, which is what makes sync and account recovery possible. The privacy policy lists exactly what is stored and where.
You can start on this device and create an account later; Passport asks before it imports anything, and shows you what it would upload.
How do I export my diary?
Settings → Backup → Export backup writes a .travelog file. It is an ordinary ZIP: your entries as JSON and your photos as image files, so your travels stay readable even without Passport.
Exports work with or without an account, and restoring one (Settings → Restore) shows you the counts and any conflicts before it merges or replaces anything.
Does it work offline?
Yes. After the first visit the app, the world boundaries and the bundled place list are cached, so you can log places on a plane or a mountain road. With an account, changes queue up on the device and sync when you are back online.
What happens to my photos?
Photos are processed in your browser before they are stored: they are re-encoded (which drops EXIF metadata, including camera details and GPS coordinates), resized, and given a thumbnail.
Without an account they stay in this browser. With an account they are uploaded to a private storage bucket that only your account can read, and they are deleted from it when you delete the photo or the account.
How do I delete my data?
Delete your account and everything in it
- 1Open Passport and go to Account (the account page in the sidebar).
- 2Scroll to the Danger zone at the bottom of the page.
- 3Choose Delete account.
- 4Confirm with your password and type DELETE when asked.
- 5Your database rows, your photo files and your sign-in are removed, and this device forgets its cached copy.
Deletion is permanent. Export a backup first if you want to keep a copy. Infrastructure backups held by our providers expire on their own schedule, which the privacy policy spells out.
Delete a diary kept on this device
- 1Open Passport and go to Settings.
- 2Scroll to the Danger zone.
- 3Choose Delete all local data.
- 4Type DELETE, then confirm with Delete everything.
- 5Every entry, place and photo in this browser is erased and preferences are reset.
Clearing your browser's site data for this site removes the same thing, along with the offline cache.
Something is wrong — how do I reach you?
Write to [SUPPORT_EMAIL] with what you did, what you expected and what happened instead. If the app showed you an error with a reference code, include it — it lets us find the matching server log without going near your diary.
The address above is a placeholder until the support mailbox is live, which is why it is not a link.
